Early images taken long ago at one of my two favorite SP roundhouses.

Photo #1 - Model NW2 SP1313 at Bayshore Roundhouse. The caption for this photo might be ‘Where’s the boiler and side rods on this goofy looking locomotive?” as seven SP roundhouse workers examine NW2 SP1313 at Bayshore Roundhouse. (The man on the ground pointing must be the foreman!)

Because Electro-Motive Corporation became the Electro-Motive Division in 1941, it is assumed the builder’s plates on the ten NW2s in this order had EMD stamped on it. In 1965, SP1313 became SP1907. When SP upgraded their fleet of NW2s at their Houston General Shops during 1971-1972, the ten 1941-built NW2s (SP1310-1319, later becoming SP1904-1913) were not included in the upgrading program. SP1313/1907 was retired in 1972.

Photo #2 - Model NW2 SP1312 at Bayshore Roundhouse in San Francisco. Built by EMD in June 1941, it became SP1906 is the 1965 General Renumbering. This diesel was retired in 1970.

Photo #3 - ALCO-GE Model S-2 SP1362 at Bayshore Roundhouse. It appears some body work was performed as part of the “Southern Pacific Lines” lettering is missing from the first two hood doors; plus the numbers are missing on this side of the cab.

This 1000-hp locomotive was built as part of an order of 26 Model S-2s in 1943 in an order allocated by the War Production Board. Like a great number of the 122 total S-2s on the SP roster, this locomotive was not assigned to a new number in the 1965 General Renumbering Plan. It was retired in 1965.

What's in the box mounted on the rear handrails of 1312 and 1362?

I'm thinking either a water cooler/ice chest or it housed the 3-section early train radio because room in the cab was limited?

My money is on water cooler.

The box is on all three units.

You are correct. The water cooler/ice chest would be eventually relocated on the NW-2's to the backside of the cab on the fireman's side between the rear door and the window.

Many pictures of SP 1100 (TR-6A unit) show that water cooler.
