I believe the first is next to the enginehouse at Minneapolis Jct., the current hideout of Milw 261 and entourage. The second one, I haven't a clue, but if in the same area, I do not know what Northtown Yard looked like before it was remodeled, I wonder if it was there, since it looks like a major terminal... === === = === JLH

Thanks my guess on the F unit was in Minny

The second one bugs me-I've seen pics of that tower before but can't recall where-my thoughts were Whitefish or Bonners Ferry ??

The thought that popped into my head is Hillyard but it's been almost 40 years since I last saw the tower and on second thought I'm not that sure.

Shot 2 looks a little like Klamath Falls to me.

That was kinda my thought too, but I think the GN built some "standardized" yard towers around the system.

Bill,

I thought the same thing, except...

To many tracks for KFalls. License plates are white. Oregon plates of the time would have been either blue or gold. I suspect someplace in Washington but don't know where.

My first guess on the second image was Klamath Falls as well. But it's not quite a match based on the image I have in my collection of a WP lash-up in front of the tower there. This was taken in June 1970, photo by Rod Loder.

A string of GN SD45s was not something you could find in Klamath Falls before the merger.

Best regards,

The second photo isn't K-Falls....it is Hillyard (Spokane)
It was photograph on September 19, 1968 by good friend and great seller Keith Ardinger.
By the looks of Boeing 747 cars is a indication of Train #97 "The West Coaster" GN's hottest!!!
By the way......Page 37 of Great Northern Color Vol. 2 by Joseph Shine and published by Four Ways West. Good pictorial!!!

pic #2 must have been a tough place to work. work all day, work all night, and get a couple of hours of shuteye in the camper, then it's all over again... dave, out.

Thanks, Mike, for confirming my thought of Hillyard. The white background license plates certainly fit Washington at the time and I thought the walkway looked correct for crossing over the main line and the start of the yard ladder to the diesel shop.

GN assigned its SD45s to the Hi Line main line freights and they seldom if ever strayed.

Bend to Bieber was run with GN Geeps (and in earlier days, Fs) plus pool SP&S power. In addition, fairly often, WP power would come as far north as Klamath Falls, as in Rod Loder's photograph. And, on occasion. GN/SP&S would also venture south of Bieber to the first meeting point with a north train.

When it was GN's turn to run the OC&E, you could see GN SD9s there, but that was about the extent of GN 6-axle power down that way.

Best regards,

Rob L.

Thanks a lot the info is much appreciated!

However the SD45 slide is an original kodachrome and the stamp on it says July 1970.
The F unit slide is May 19,1969.

I was surprised to see the K.F. style yard tower was in more than one location. Didn't know the design was used at Hillyard as well. It would be interesting to see any articles or drawings discussing the design.
