BRC 100th Street Yard Chicago IL
Author: kevink

Down on Chicago’s far southeast side near the intersection of East 100th Street and South Commercial Avenue is Belt Railway of Chicago's 100th Street Yard. East of this yard is KCBX Terminal’s rail-to-water transfer facility that has long been a location where coal is transloaded onto lake boats or barges for delivery to its final destination. Photos of this operation have always been a challenge and only once have I been able to see the KCBX’s 1872 (ex-NP GP9) and 1874 (ex-KCS GP7) actually moving.
One April morning in 1996 found me wandering across the tracks at 100th Street. I first spotted three SP locomotives just south of the crossing with SP 8677 facing north and SP 196 and 146 on the south end. Even more interesting were the two KCBX locomotives that I spotted MOVING onto the yard tracks adjacent to the SP motors.

Edited the yard name per CSX_ENG's comments below.

Deciding to gamble and risk parking on the access road into the yard, I was rewarded when the KCBX locos started in my direction. They came to a stop and then I noticed the crossing gates at 100th Street were down and a coal train was slowly moving south. I had missed the power which was now behind the SP and KCBX power. It turned out to be BRC 602 and 600 pulling into the yard.

I went there almost weekly back then shooting video and pics. It was a great place to watch the BRC work the yard with the Alcos.
Thanks for posting.

I believe you are at BRC's 100 Street Yard. Commercial Ave Yard is alongside 95th between Stoney Island and Commercial Ave....

P.S. Great photos!!!

Can anyone supply the heritage of the KCBX Geeps? They
look to be ex-BN/nee-NP engines. The numbers would fit
for BN.
