Nostalgia & History >Date: 09/03/13 06:25 Author: terrybaker Continuing on the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair journey from yesterday, following an overnight stay in Portland, my grandfather and I rode Train No. 457, UP’s contribution to the Portland-Seattle pool, on the final leg of our northward journey. The 9/3/62 version of 457 was running in two sections, due to extra cars chartered by tour groups, and our First 457 was headed up by F3 No. 1461. FP7 1499 was in charge of the second section and both were running out their final miles before being traded in to EMD: 1461 in 1/63 and 1499 in 8/64. In 1962, the UP actually owned very little of the track it operated over between Portland and Seattle, and that’s apparent when we see clearances and orders from SP&S, NP and MILW and note that our train operated with a different number on two of those railroads.
This posting wraps up my train order anniversary week, and I hope you operation aficionados enjoyed these daily snapshots into the nitty-gritty of railroad history. It was fun putting it together and reliving some personal memories. 1) thru 3) Portland OR - SP&S clnc. and orders 227-237 Date: 09/03/13 06:26 Author: terrybaker Date: 09/03/13 06:28 Author: terrybaker Date: 09/03/13 06:29 Author: terrybaker Date: 09/03/13 06:30 Author: terrybaker Date: 09/03/13 06:32 Author: terrybaker Date: 09/03/13 06:33 Author: terrybaker 17) and 18) Black River WA – UP clnc. and order 547

connecting from the SP's Cascade. It did not run in two sections but the train was HUGE and jam-packed full. Forever burned into my memory: upon arrival in Seattle at Union Station, the announcement on the PA system: "All passengers going to Everett, Bellingham and Vancouver BC, please follow the arrows to the other station," which was King St., where Great Northern's Pacific International awaited. as on one of the to's. That's one you don't see used in today's touchy, feely world of railroading !!!! |
