Nostalgia & History > Remember the Niagara Junction Railroad ?Date: 10/07/13 13:48 Remember the Niagara Junction Railroad ? Author: NKP715 Niagara Junction was the line which
served industries in and around the Niagara Falls, NY area. It was of course unique for its use of electric locomotives, the newest being seven E10B motors built by GE in 1952. First two views of number 17 taken in Dec of 1965, when I found the railroad "by accident." Next, number 20, in November, 1968. The NJ found its way into Conrail, which operated the electrics for about a year and a half. Last two shots date to August of 1977, showing number 14 now disguised as CR 4750. The three steeple cabs ended up on MetroNorth, working in Grand Central Terminal, North White Plains, etc. Conrail had adapted them for third rail operations. I would like to do a model of one or two of them. Kris Date: 10/08/13 05:23 Re: Remember the Niagara Junction Railroad ? Author: mopacrr Who took over the Niagara Junction after the CR split up, and is there much left?
Date: 10/08/13 06:36 Re: Remember the Niagara Junction Railroad ? Author: aehouse I attended nearby Niagara University 1965-69, and never exposed as much as a single frame on the NJ, for which I could kick myself. I was into mainline, Class 1 railroading, and to me the NJ was nothing but a trolley shortline operating in and around secured off and smelly chemical plants, so I never took an interest. Wish that I had!

I worked for USRA from 1978 through 1980, and I remember when the E10s (Conrail class) were transferred to Conrail and into the 4700 series (all electrics were in the 4000 series on Conrail except the two GM experimentals).
I never saw them in service on Metro-North. Would love to see photos. When PATCO was being constructed in southern New Jersey in the late 1960s, they decided they needed an electric locomotive, and obtained one of the 1920s Niagara Junction units that the E10s had replaced. A few years ago during the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Ben Franklin Bridge, PATCO sent the locomotive and two repainted former "Bridge Cars" (now in MOW service) up to the bridge for display. I was lucky enough to ride back to Lindenwold on the locomotive aa a guest of the then General Manager. I've never seen a photo of the locomotive and the two Bridge Cars, although the return trip was made on a Saturday in the middle of the afternoon. Photos, anyone? |
