Nostalgia & History > Emil-File: RG in Salt Lake City, June 1950Date: 12/04/13 07:05 Emil-File: RG in Salt Lake City, June 1950 Author: donstrack On June 25, 1950, D&RGW was one of five railroads (D&RGW, CGW, CRI&P, GN, WP) that were shut down by a strike by the Switchmen's Union. Emil Albrecht took the opportunity to take photos of the idle motive power in and around the D&RGW shop and yard in downtown Salt Lake City, all from the vantage point of the 4th South street viaduct that provided an excellent view.
1) Looking north, showing the locomotives in and around the D&RGW roundhouse. 2) D&RGW 3711, a 4-6-6-4. 3) D&RGW 5461 as lead unit of a set of A-B-B-A EMD FTs. All 13 photos can be viewed by clicking this link: http://donstrack.smugmug.com/UtahRails/Emil-Albrecht-Photos/1950-Jun-RG-in-Salt-Lake-City Don Strack Date: 12/04/13 07:18 Re: Emil-File: RG in Salt Lake City, June 1950 Author: donstrack Here is a chance to show a before and after. The first photo shows D&RGW and WP power on the north side of D&RGW's Salt Lake City shops, which faced north toward 2nd South street.
The second photo, looking south, shows that the building still stands today. UTA built its offices to the north of it, closer to 2nd South, which today is known as 200 South. But you can see that it is the same large building. The tracks to the left are UP's ex-D&RGW mainline to Ogden, and UTA's Frontrunner North tracks to Ogden. The Frontrunner station is on the far left side. Don Strack Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/04/13 07:20 by donstrack. them. While I haven't explored the links, I have very much enjoyed the photos that have been posted. Now, a question. I'm trying to identify the FT on the right in the first photo. Is that a WP unit? I'm not familiar with that paint scheme. Again, thanks for posting these. Nick Tharalson, Marion, IA Date: 12/04/13 08:14 Re: Emil-File: RG in Salt Lake City, June 1950 Author: balryan Nick
The WP FT paint scheme is the paint scheme they came delivered in from EMD. Ryan Ballard Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/04/13 10:32 by balryan. Date: 12/04/13 08:41 Re: Emil-File: RG in Salt Lake City, June 1950 Author: railwaybaron Rio Grande is my railroad!

An excellent scheme, IMHO. You can also see just a bit of the front of a WP FT in the same scheme in the lower left of image 3. Z |
