So what's the reporting mark and number on the dome? And going east or west? Looks like a dome sleeper, former NP 313.

Wonder how those cars will do after they've been sent over the hump and down into the bowl. Don't think it won't happen, it already has for several passenger cars shipped via freight.

If there are "Do Not Hump" signs plastered everywhere; then it will get humped for sure.

Here is what my expert friend says about the dome:

It's a former Northern Pacific or Burlington dome - sleeper but it is hard to say more about it than just that. It looks like it is carrying SLRG lettering just above where the car's number use to be, but trying to come up with more is hard since there isn't a lot posted to the web about these cars after Amtrak retired them, aside from the few that are in use as private varnish. The owner of the DOME.main website passed away over a year ago so I don't expect that that site will be updated any more.

Here is his website (Passenger Car Photo Index) if you never visited it:

Iowa Pacific already has one of the former NP dome sleepers. Wondering if this was heading to join it or going elsewhere.

My guess is the CB&Q 305. It was in LA and a deal was in the works for IP to buy it. Why is it in Roseville ? Odd routing to go East unless its going to the Mount Hood ( IP property )for work or to Santa Cruz ? There were 9 of these living West of the Mississipi until just a few years ago.
CB&Q 304 - at my house.
CB&Q 305 - Stored in LA, owned by the PV "Puget Sound" folks.
SP&S 306 - Anshutz's "California" of Ski Train Fame.
NP 307 - was at my house, now in Madison IL.
NP 309 - Spokane WA, Mike Gelhaus.
NP 310 - Fargo ND, Now in Canada.
NP 311 - Monad Ry Eq. Home in LA.
NP 312 - Virginia City Rail Corp, Redwood City CA, now IP and painted IC, moved East.
NP 313 - Spokane WA, Mike Gelhaus.

NP 308 is scrapped.

NP 314 - Lives in North Carolina.

Around 1996-ish I had a Dome moving East on the U.P. on a flat. Huge "Do Not Hump" signs everywhere. It got to North Platte and guess what - They humped it. Carmen got it tied back down so they went ahead and humped it again.

Ya know, somewhere in the GCOR there is a rule that says passenger equipment will NOT be kicked, dropped, or cut off in motion. Guess no one reads that.

The dome sleeper is the former NP 305 and was purchased (or at least a small deposit made towards purchase) some time ago by I-P. It was most recently stored in Salinas, CA. Most likely moving to Alamosa, CO.

I wasn't aware that it went to Salinas. Roseville makes sense now.

The business car is the Union Pacific #107, ex St. Louis, originally built as MP #12. The car was shipped cross country from the Mendocraft Museum in Pennsylvania. The car considered surplus in their collection and they found a new home for the 107 at the California State Railroam Museum. The CSRM has recently restored sister car UP # 103.

Why would CSRM need two of these when a lot of other interesting equipment that they have is going to rot?

Can you say, "the 4014 is coming" ? The CSRM has ALWAYS relied heavily on the UP for monetary support (if not, out-and-out handouts) for projects they have no money for. When the Southern Pacific was taken over by Uncle Pete, the CSRM had a multi-million dollar list of " we want this and we want that" in the SP yard. The thinking goes " oh, if it says Union Pacific on it", they will fund it for us.
Just look what happened to the Santa Fe collection from New Mexico, and how it got raped out in the yard, and then broken up and traded off. BNSF not handing out funds, OK let's get rid of their stuff.
The CSRM has their hand out ALL the time, . . . . give us something for FREE.
