More CB&Q E7s
Author: MartyBernard

I'm saving the best for the fourth picture!

1. CB&Q F7A 9932A with the First #30, the AK-SAR-BEN Zephyr. I think the marker lights are green. This was July 7, 1963 at Leland. 9932A was built March 1949 and wrecked October 15, 1966. Anybody remember that wreck?

2. 9933A with two more E7s on August 30, 1970 at Downers Grove, Fairview, Av. with the eastbound Denver Zephyr. She was built March 1949 and became BN 9913.

3. 9933A again with the DZ a couple of days later at Hinsdale, IL.

.... one more....

4. And now for the best shot. E7A 9936A with the eastbound Denver Zephyr at Fairview Ave., Downers Grove, IL in August 1968. 9936A was built March 1949 and became BN 9922.

Hope you enjoy these,
Marty Bernard

All absolutely fantastic, Marty, but my personal favorite is the first one at Leland. Everything about that photo says the depot at Leland would have been a wonderfully idyllic place for a boy (I was 11 in July, 1963) to have spent those summer days. At least it says that to me.

I still think that the CB&Q had the best paint scheme.

Everything about the Q was cool.

9 times out of 10, I can pick the pre-1965 photos from those taken afterwards based on how much cleaner and neater everything looks. The whole country went to hell in the late 1960s.

Great!!! Very interesting in that it appears that some of the trailing units actually had stainless steel side panels (like on ATSF psgr F-Units), while the leaders silver paint. But mostly E7 consists? Wonder why the CB&Q would paint over the stainless panels with silver paint--or am I mistaken about the stainless? Look closely--some of those units look too shiny to be simply "clean" silver-painted locos. I know the older Es had real stainless panels, but perhaps it depended upon date of delivery of the E7s as to whether they got them? And I don't think the later Es actually got more than simply silver paint? But all very attractive, and wonderful shots and great scenery!

Some CB&Q E7s had real stainless side panels. They later gave BN fits when they tried to paint over them with Cascade Green. A number of them ended up with green noses and the stainless was left alone.

I love the Sears service trucks in the second picture-- hard to believe what was once so commonplace is now long gone.

Correct about the stainless steel side panels. Some E7s had them,
some did not, I was told that it related to post-war shortages
of some items, including at times stainless steel.

Makes sense--we often forget that the E7s were by far the most numerous E-Units built and in production longer than any of the other ones. So this would account for the variations regarding stainless v. non-stainless units on the same RR. Thanks.
