'SFe #12 N of Wichita'
Author: santafe199

Here’s a quaint little piece of Santa Fe history only 75 years young last month! It’s a fair bet to say this location looks a tad bit different these days…

1. AT&SF 10 on train #12 north of Wichita, KS in March of 1939.

Thanks for looking back!

Best we don't go into that. This is, of course, one of the "Twins"
built for the original "Super Chief", which the Santa Fe severely
modified over the years. In addition to the revised front end, for
better crew protection, notice the engine has been changed from a
B-B to and A1A-B configuration. The other twin became a freight engine.
I'll let Even correct me here as I'm working off the top of my head that's
six bricks short of a load.

Ain't this a EMD-or is it EMC? While #10 won't win any beauty contest, the "bulldog nose" modification set up the future famous F unit design.

The 10 was the loco that became the 2611, the freight engine. wag216

Unusual black roof on the RPO-Baggage.

Look at all those louvers on the roof line, and it looks like an air scoop on the rear. Wild!

Many early diesels had lost of louvers on the roof. Also, it's easy to complain about appearances from the perspective of nearly 70 years...

It's even weirder than that - the lead axle was unpowered, so the wheel arrangement was 1B-B. Two months after this photo was taken, the rear truck was replaced with a three axle truck identical to the front truck, so the wheel arrangement became 1B-1B.

Larry Brasher in his book on the One-Spot Twins says that the boxcabs were generally referred to as 1A and 1B, even though the letter suffix was apparently never displayed on either unit. Both units were rebuilt into five-axle turret cabs like the one in the picture in 1938 - the 1A became 1 and the 1B became 10. They both got three-axle rear trucks in 1939. In 1941, the 10 was decapitated into a booster numbered 1A, and in 1948 it was rebuilt again into a 4-axle, Blomberg-trucked, zebra-striped boxcab "transfer switcher" numbered 2611. In 1953, both 2611 and turret cab 1 went back to EMD as trade-ins to be "rebuilt" into E8m boosters 84A and 83A.

I'll settle for Evan if you forgive my errant typing.
Thanks for the refresher.
