CB&Q E8s, Part 4
Author: MartyBernard

1. CB&Q E8A 9966 built in 1952 and became BN 9966. Here we see her with the California Zephyr flying on the Zephyr Track through the Chicago suburb of Westmont one summer afternoon in 1965 for a morning arrival in the Mile High City and then a daytime ride through the Rockies.

2. 9967 has the inbound California Zephyr at Westmont on June 15, 1962. She was built in 1952 and became BN 9967(E8A), BN 9905(E9AM), and MARC 65(E9AM).

3. And pulling the Denver Zephyr its last few miles to its Chicago bumper post is 9968. Built in 1952 she became BN 9968 and them AMTRAK 351. The location is the Congress Park commuter stop.

6. Yes, the Chicago Western Suburbs are nice. Here's 9973 in Lisle on May 24, 1964. Built in August 1953 and became BN 9973.

Here are three shots taken in my home town of Westmont of E8A 9973.

7. Today, most or all diesel-powered commuter rail operations do not change the length (number of cars) of trains during off-hours thus accumulating many extra miles on the cars and consuming many extra gallons of diesel fuel. It seems to be a trade-off between labor costs and fuel and equipment costs. In this picture 9973 is leading a commuter run on Sunday July 5, 1964, and the Q obviously didn't expect many riders and cut the train to one push-pull galley car. The trade-off between labor costs and fuel and equipment costs must have been different back then.

8. Why a power car with one gallery car? Because the train left maybe another 9 gallery cars in the Chicago yards for its mid-day runs in June of 1965 and will pick them up for the evening commuters.

9. My notes say 9973 has been on a road trip with a passenger extra. I'm not sure. July 30, 1965 in Westmont.

I hope you have enjoyed these Q E8As.

Have LOVED your "Q" goodies, Marty - but these were especially nice! One only had to go to the "Zephyr Pit" near Union Station to see these elegant E's in abundance.

Thanks!

Bob

The spur is a team track if the shipper or consignee has no siding. I doubt it is used much. Signals -- that is the interlocking ffor the IHB.

As I mentioned in CB&Q E8's in Part 2 and 3, CB&Q RR operating crews (coductors, brakemen and enginemen) on the both the Cal and the Denver Zephyrs, were all based out of Galesburg, IL and worked between Galesburg and Chicago.
