K-4

It seems that the Railroader's Memorial Museum intends to put PRR K-4 1361 back in running order, my personal feeling is that I'll never live long enough to see this, anyway, a look at 1361 the last time I saw her run.

1361 was shipped to Altoona looking very forlorn and dejected.

Railroader's Memorial Museum has a new "Quarter house" where the rebuild process is supposed to take place, in a recent visit I didn't see any heavy equipment to support a rebuild effort. Time will once again tell.

Maybe they can merge with the UP 4014 project and get a two-fer. Two what is another kettle of fish altogether.

K-4, one of the finest workhorses of the venerable Pennsylvania Railroad.

Ed, you are probably correct that you and a lot of us will never see it operate again. The only way would be for someone with deep pockets put the locomotive in a shop such as Strasburg and have the engine completely rebuilt so as to pass an inspection. And like I have said, with very deep pockets as this engine will be very expensive to rebuild since I am sure that it will need just about everything rebuilt, and hopefully all the parts that were taken off at Steamtown can be found.

IIRC money was not the problem. Supposedly there is a 2 million around for it from the state. The problem as I remember it was idiotic management and poor workmanship (welding) that stalled the rebuild. That is what I remember reading about.

As the grandson of a nearly 50 year Pennsy man, I dream about seeing the K-4 back in steam one more time. I do still have a faint recollection of the K-4s on the Jersey Meadows and at Asbury Park.

The LIRR didn't own K4's but they did lease some from the Pennsy, so it's very possible you did see them on the LIRR.

I went to the station in New Hyde Park with my dad . I was around 5 at the time. Watched the diesel commuters go by Rs's I think . Anyway here comes I think it was a K4 and I mean blasting at full speed. I ran into the back of the depot and hid in the phone booth . It scared the crap out of me. My dad thought it was pretty funny. A little later another came by , a deadhead G5 I think and he put his arm around me this time so I would not be scared. After that I could stand there and not run away. this brought back a heck of a memory .
