Nostalgia & History > Santa Fe Cabooses RevisitedDate: 04/22/14 08:16 Santa Fe Cabooses Revisited Author: ntharalson The other day, a shot of some Santa Fe cabooses(cabeese)/waycars was posted that
included 999700, the only extended vision cupola car to get the SPSF paint scheme. I posted a reply that I have a shot of that car, and I have it attached here. For those curious, this is just off the east end of the Des Moines River bridge, MP252, into Iowa. It' was taken about 9:00am on July 14th, 1989, which was pretty late in the game for Santa Fe waycars. However, this was the 301 train, which was a favorite of us east end fans because of its usual little Geep power, usually four or five units. This shot is no longer possible, and not because the Santa Fe is gone. The Santa Fe had bulldozed the side of this hill to fill in the bridge over the former Rock Island K&D line, long out of service. It's that brown splotch at the end of the curve. Over the twenty plus years since this shot was taken, the foliage has reclaimed the area. It was also a dangerous walk, and you HAD to walk, to get there. So, while we are sad to lose the spot, we are safer, and that would be a good thing. Nick Tharalson, Marion, IA Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 04/22/14 08:21 by ntharalson. |
