Nostalgia & History > Toto Tuesday : Now We Can RelaxDate: 07/22/14 09:14 Toto Tuesday : Now We Can Relax Author: PRose We all remember those family outings where trains are NOT the primary focus of the expedition. However, if one happens to show up enroute
or returning from the final destination, so much the better. In 1994, we were meeting some friends from Kechi, KS at El Dorado Lake for an afternoon/evening barbeque. My wife knew the quickest way from Salina was straight down I-135 to Wichita and then east on 96 to El Dorado. As we left Salina, NOT on I-135, but on highway 81, she subtly inquired as to my route. I thought it would be a nicer drive down through the Flint Hills down to El Dorado. She smirked and said OK. She knew me too well. Upon arriving at Strong City, present day meeting point for Kansas Gang "shootouts", I heard a horn from the east. "Hot Damn". Here is the KCLJ (KC-La Junta) highballing by the depot at Strong City. Upon getting back into the car, my wife smiled and said, "Thank you Santa Fe. Now we can relax". ATSF KCLJ Strong City, KS June 28, 1994. Thanks for looking.
