Question about railroad ownership?
Author: edsaalig

Did the Reading Company Locomotive Shops on the Reading Railroad ever become the Conrail car shops in Reading, Pennsylvania? If so on what date did that take place? Thank You.

I believe caboose refurbishment and mow equipment repair. It was also where the business car train was based out of.

Conrail took over the Reading (and the other class 1s) on April 1, 1976. As I recall, the Reading shops did survive for a few years into Conrail, but by the early 1980s the shops and the hump yard were closed. The facility sat pretty much intact - including the large coal dock - until the 1990s. CR parked their unneeded 40-foot boxcars along the Reading for miles and miles east of Reading in the late 1970s.
