Really neat picture, the scene looks like it is headed for San Jose out of Newark.
Your description says East bound, It looks like the curve out of Newark headed for San Jose.

Most anything running away from San Francisco was Eastbound on the SP. No north or south.

And the freight units in question are a pair of GP40Xs. SDP45, GP40P-2 and GP40X all in the same consist. And a fairly common occurance in the Bay Area at that time. Interesting times on the SP, that's fure sure.
