Alaska Rotary Snowplows Working -- Amazing
Author: MartyBernard

Now for something very different in August. It is unbelievable to this midwestern boy that they keep their track clear with this much snow.

Note, the photos and captions are from Alaska's Digital Archives.

1. Plowing through snow - Alaska Rail Road. View of steam locomotive plowing through deep snow. The locomotive most likely has a rotary snow clearing blade. UAA-hmc-0381-series2-11-1 University of Alaska Anchorage

2. It took 6 weeks to clear 36 miles like this. Rail gang clearing snow along with rotary snow plow. UAF-2003-63-195 University of Alaska Fairbanks

3. No. 104 Rotary and train at slide, Mar. 26, 1904. An avalanche apparently covered the railroad track near Fairbanks. UAF-1979-41-18 University of Alaska Fairbanks

This would've been the Alaska Central Railroad that operated 51 miles of ROW north from Seward until going into receivership in 1909 (Wikipedia)?

Great images.
