Nostalgia & History > Young fan with wild hair at Soda SpringsDate: 08/26/14 09:01 Young fan with wild hair at Soda Springs Author: Copy19 What with the recent posts about Soda Springs on California's Donner Pass I dug through my photo box for my versions. In one set of three I noticed a kid with wild hair who really stood out in my back lit shots. The first one shows him and his friends aboard the SP8459 anxiously looking down the grade from the Soda Springs grade crossing. Apparently the Friendly was very friendly that day. They are rewarded by the passage of the eastbound Amtrak San Francisco Zephyr led by former Union Pacific E units. Note the unique crossing signals. Later the wild-haired kid is caught lower left watching helpers on the eastbound freight.

The spreaders and rotaries make a high berm so they added a unit that could be seen above the snow.
I went skiing there in the mid 60s (I think it was Soda Springs) and had borrowed a pair of "Head" skis, They had metal on the sides and when you would go over the tracks, the lights and bells would start and stop. That could be a good thing. ------------------------------------------------------- > Ah...the 60s...forget wild hair, hair period. Date: 08/26/14 16:17 Re: Young fan with wild hair at Soda Springs Author: AmtrakJulie Awesome John! Thanks for digging through that collection :).
