Nostalgia & History > New England RR Archaeology WhereizitDate: 08/29/14 13:55 New England RR Archaeology Whereizit Author: JPB Cyclists in New England may well know where this RR milepost is (both pictures are two sides of the same milepost).
Where is this, what RR RoW was this, and what do "W" and "P" signify? Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/29/14 13:57 by JPB. Date: 08/29/14 14:04 Re: New England RR Archaeology Whereizit Author: elu34ch New York and New England Railroad (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Railroad was the Worcester, Nashua and Rochester Railroad, later folded into the B&M W stands for Worcester, P stands for Portland. I biked this about a month ago - nice trail!! Edited 1 time(s). Correct! This particular MP is actually located between Pepperell, MA and Groton, MA along the Nashua River Rail Trail, a very scenic and easy to ride 13 mile paved trail. Does anyone know if this kind of MP showing distance to two endpoints is unique? In my experience a MP usually indicates mileage to just one location. This one is at Bardane, one mile west of Shenandoah Junction, WV. B=Baltimore, MD, and W=Wheeling, WV. Of course, you can't get to Wheeling this way now. Gerry Edited 1 time(s). In front of my old apartment in Wakefield MA there was a milepost that had distances to Boston on one side (B 10) and to South Berwick, Maine on the other (SB whatever number I can't recall). My girlfriend used to joke walking past the thing that we were the only two people in Wakefield that knew --or cared--exactly how far we were from South Berwick. Also some of the oldest mileposts on the D&H between Albany and Binghamton had both distances indicated. |
