A lone flare ....
Author: valmont

This from my mFile, no info, except that this was IC's lone SD45. Why only one?

I think it was a demo unit to boot.

IC bought the original Demo, 4351. See the metallic blue paint showing through on the nose? EMD must have made them one sweet deal, as they also bought the original GP40 demo, 433A. The 4351 had spent many, many hours on the IC over the years prior to being sold by EMD.

Great shot V!

Vince, that's at Memphis. I shot that unit a few times but that particular one is not mine. I believe it might be a Terry Foshee slide.

They didn't buy more because of the pure ALCO glory they had in C636 units. The SD45 looks wimpy compared to a C636, so you gotta keep up your appearances!

Wasn't that #433A an SD40 demo?

433A was the lone GP40 test bed and became IC 3075.

The SD40 test beds (SD40X) were 434 and 434A through 434H. 434 became GM&O 950 and then ICG at the merger. 434A through 434H went to UP as 3040 through 3047.

I notice that the horns were located to the rear over the long hood. They must have been pretty loud over the short hood.

The photos shown are of two different units - one is IC's SD45 and the other became IC GP40X #3075.
