UP cars at Carney's Express in LA
Author: donstrack

Did anyone happen to record the car numbers of the former UP car placed at their Sunset Strip location in 1975, and the other former UP car placed at their Studio City location in 1981.

The Sunset Strip car would be a UP 500 class because it is a former UP streamlined heavyweight.

There are two cars at the Studio City location. One of them is former UP 620x, a Lounge car, likely UP 6205, Mojave River.

Photo 1) Google view of the two cars at Studio City.

Photo 2) Google view of the single car on Sunset Strip.

Apparently, they make a pretty good burger...

There was a former UP 44 seat coach in Glendale in the late 90s. Is that branch gone now?

Or maybe not--looks like a fire engine and paramedic truck in the street in front of the restaurant, in the second photo.

Yes, Carney's has some real good food, and the owners are real good people as well. Not too many Mom N Pop burger places in So CA any more that are owned by actual Americans.

Correct that the Sunset Strip location has a former 500 series coach. Less known is the 1/2 of a former 6200 series UP lounge behind the 500 series coach used as the kitchen.

Studio City has 2 cars as noted. The one out front is a former L&N ACF 1955-built divided coach. It was former Amtrak 6057. The kitchen car (mostly out of view) is a former SP single unit pre-war Daylight coach.

The former Glendale location (closed for many years) had former Amtrak 4552 (IIRC). It was a former UP SLC 1960-built car. This car is still owned by Carney's but was moved to a storage facility in Fontana, CA for possible future re-use.

In a gross dereliction of duty, I don't have any other numbers of these cars readily available. But feel free to contact me off line and I should be able to get them for you.

The photo gallery at the Carney's web site includes the attached photos of a cut-down UP car. You can see the '620' part of the number. The others in the 6200-6208 series are mostly accounted for -- my own guess is that it was UP 6205.

I was unaware of the Glendale location. Amtrak 4552 is ex UP 5492, built by St. Louis Car in April 1960. The "Amtrak By The Numbers" book, page 140, shows AMTK 4552 retired in February 1985. I found a photo of the Glendale location on flickr, with a note that the restaurant had already closed by the time of the October 1995 photo. I have updated the roster listing.
