Pacific Electric sold all their 1200-class cars except 1299 to Kaiser Steel in Fontana in 1951. They were much better cars than the ex-IER and NWP "Blimps" but they didn't have the same passenger carrying capacity. Here again, the cars were set on fire to clear out the non-metallic contents and make them ready for the open-hearth furnaces. Earlier casualties were the 800-class cars, most of which were scrapped and burned at PE's Torrance Shops in 1940-41. In one of those "O saddest words of tongue or pen: 'It might have been'" situations, had the 800s lasted another two years, PE might not have needed the "Blimps" and some of the 1200s might have survived long enough to be saved by what is now Orange Empire Ry. Museum.

Reminds me of the picture of the burning of the PE cars on Terminal Island in the Port of LA.

I'm thinking of the Milwaukee Observation car that was burned, apparently there was only one or two photos of it happening. It made for some bad PR and apparently made the Mgmt upset about rail photographers.

It was a very common method of separating metal and non-metal at the time. What would you do with a car with all the metal removed anyways, it's a pile of stuff that would have to be hauled away somewhere else.
