Tony I figured you might have crossed paths with this one. It's around a corner, I got lucky and poked my head around it looking for rails. Here's a closeup.

Bill it's bolted in place to a pipe that's on the other side of it. I suppose it was a conservation effort of some kind with anti-theft measures to keep it there.

One might argue that it is a museum piece. Because of the way it weathered it looks authentic. This brings up a couple of questions.

1. Is it in its original place? Did Western Pacific tracks go buy there? I'm sure it couldn't have survived the construction of those buildings. So did somebody steal it from anther place and put it there?

2. Why would anybody put an artifact there, in what appears to be a public area?

The answer is Rhode Island off 16th St. in a bit of Western Pacific ROW that headed to the Potrero tunnel.
