Nostalgia & History > Columbus, OH and the National LimitedDate: 08/31/14 21:46 Columbus, OH and the National Limited Author: bradleymckay The recent discussion concerning Amtrak's National Limited over on the passenger board got me to thinking about this trials and tribulations this train endured during the late 1970's, before finally being axed by Amtrak in late 1979. Here is one such challenge:

First mistake, demolishing CUS....Why, Why, Why.. well again I can understand...It's Ohio...no disrespect to Ohians.........The new Amtrak station was better than no station......
We could have enjoyed the 3C project returning passenger service to Ohio....too bad Kasich t was elected Governor.....I hope he does not get elected again.. Steve Date: 09/01/14 09:00 Re: Columbus, OH and the National Limited Author: bnsfbob santafedan Wrote:

The Amtrak National had little in common with the B&O National. Amtrak hi-jacked the name because it's easier to say than "The Spirit of St Louis" Bob Date: 09/01/14 13:38 Re: Columbus, OH and the National Limited Author: MEKoch Can someone post a picture of Columbus Union Station when it was nice and populated with passengers?
Unfortunately Kasich is very likely to be re-elected, as the Democratic candidate has committed major blunders in his past, which are now coming out. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/01/14 13:40 by MEKoch. Date: 09/01/14 13:52 Re: Columbus, OH and the National Limited Author: RuleG bnsfbob Wrote:

Amtrak hi-jacked the name because > it's easier to say than "The Spirit of St Louis" > > Bob Why do you use "hi-jack" to describe the process by which Amtrak named the National Limited? Your explanation is unconvincing. Amtrak renamed the "Panama Limited" to "City of New Orleans." If you believe that Amtrak's goal was to use names which were easiest to say, it could have selected "American," "St. Louisan" or "Jeffersonian" (all names of PRR trains linking New York/Washington with St. Louis via Pittsburgh). I rode the St. Louisan in 68...Was there more of a mail train?
