Author: Super_C Vince's great thread (http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,3509022) reminded me of a shot I took west of Cheyenne at Borie, WY of UP 72 East descending Sherman Hill on #2 track on a cold February 1972 morning. There is enough smoke to obscure the train behind the stock cars.

The engineer had an arming switch on his control stand. At any point if the speed dropped below 5 mph, he would hit this switch igniting the JATO's (Jet Assisted Take Off -- Jointly developed by Boeing & EMD) giving an extra 5000 horsepower for about 10 seconds. Certain C-130's, most B47's and certain other aircraft were also fitted with this apparatus. Use of this system was common on Sherman in the late 60's and early 70's.

IIRC, the ruling grade (via the 'old' line) from Sherman down to Cheyenne was/is 1.55%, Wabash2800. YukonYeti is -- of course -- pulling your leg. Back to yer cave, Yeti. :p Pat from Littleton, CO. Author: BCHellman Considering this and the earlier shot by Valmont, did the UP routinely have tonnage trains that required a sustained brake set in addition to full dynamics to keep the train under control while coming off Sherman?

Author: GN599 It must be remembers that the vast majority of the rolling stock, even in this era had cast iron brake shoes, which made more smoke/sparks than today's composition shoes. Also the same majority of rolling stock had friction bearing trucks with years of journal oil goo caked on the wheels. So back then it was easier to get this kind of smoke.
