OKT power 26 years ago at Herington, KS
Author: JoCoLB

These two pictures show five locomotives in an Oklahoma-Kansas-Texas Railroad consist parked near the railroad office in Herington, Kan., on July 31, 1988. In the middle of the consist were three units that were wearing green and yellow, the color scheme of the parent company, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (Katy).

The train was resting on a former main line of the previous Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad that extended south from Herington to Wichita and Caldwell and then into Oklahoma and Texas. The OKT acquired the route following the demise of the Rock Island in 1980.

...And that last motor is an ex-Kennecott Copper GP38, which had its specially-equipped extended-height cab lowered. The fuel tank is still the reinforced, high-clearance tank from its original owner Kennecott. It was still around as of a couple of years ago, in local service out of LaSalle, CO repainted in full UP colors. It may be still around. === === = === JLH

The ex Kennecott Copper units that were rebuilt and sent to MKT are EMD GP39-2's not GP 38's.
