Great Northern FTs and F3s
Author: MartyBernard

Here are more photos of GN F-units.

1. In Minneapolis the pigeons are big. On June 14, 1964 I found GN 257A and B, a FTA and B pair of freight locomotives built in October 1945 and traded to EMD February 5, 1965. It looks like I did a slight pan because the background is slightly blurred. Good for me! Remember, I was working with Kodachrome 10, i.e., ISO of 10. The picture is backlit, so I worked hard the other day both with the scanner software and post-scanning software to pull some of the detail of the trucks out of the shadow.

2. Over in St. Paul on June 20, 1964 I found F3A 350C built November 1947 and traded to EMD February 7, 1966 and F7B 373B built as 280B then BN 9741 then sold to Precision National Corp. April 1, 1974. These were both passenger train locomotives.

3. Also in St. Paul but on June 1, 1964 was passenger unit F3A 356A built in December 1947. Subsequent to me photographing her, she and converted to freight unit 275A on June 17, 1969, became BN 612 and was traded to EMD April 12, 1972 on GP38-2 order.

I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge Ben Ringnalda's excellent "Great Northern Empire" web site for the historical data on these F-units and the U-boats in the post above.

Enjoy,
Marty Bernard

Wow, great photos. Amazing clarity but I guess that's what ASA 10 is all about.

Modernized was my favorite scheme but I was young and impressionable at the time.

thanks for posting.

Fantastic photos, thank you.

In photo one, the sides of both units a little dinged up.

Higher resolution shows that the paint was falling off and the bare metal was showing through.

Thanks Marty for the look back. Upon close inspection, it appears the fireman is checking you out in the first shot. That is my favorite of the three.
