Nostalgia & History > CTADate: 09/14/14 09:30 CTA Author: Auburn_Ed This was west of the Loop, Oak Park or so. About 1961 or s. Here the CTA travelled at street level alongside the (fill in the blank) railroad (elevated). Anyone know the station?
Ed Date: 09/14/14 11:49 Re: CTA Author: DaveL I know this is not much help, but it is not Harlem Ave. or Wisconsin Ave.
G'ma lived 2 blocks away when I was a kid.........no memory of that type of building across the C&NW. DaveL Date: 09/14/14 15:05 Re: CTA Author: MartyBernard Ed, too easy. It's the Lake Street "L" station 26 minutes from the Loop.
Marty Date: 09/14/14 17:23 Re: CTA Author: kevink It sure looks like the east end of the CTA Harlem Station. The tracks were at grade along South Street which was just south of the CNW elevated tracks. Looks like the photo is taken at Marion Street looking north: https://www.google.com/maps/@41.8870691,-87.802556,20z
Date: 09/14/14 19:27 Re: CTA Author: MartyBernard It could be one of maybe a half dozen stations that were not raised when the C&NW was raised. Since the time of the picture room was made in the C&NW raised right-of-way for the Lake Street "L" so many grade crossings were eliminated which was the same reason the C&NW was raised.
So kevink, why do you think it is Marion Street as opposed to any of the other similar stations? I can't find that one building of which we can see part on the north side of the tracks with Google Street View. I assume the 26 minutes was measured to Lake and Wells. Today without grade crossings and higher accelerating cars the time from Harlem to Randolph is 25 min. Marty Bernard Date: 09/14/14 20:18 Re: CTA Author: ICE6A4001 The building in the picture is on the northwest corner of North Blvd. and Marion St. The windows are a match. Plus if you look at the station sign it says Marion St. Station.
