Some UP power around the engine house on cool March day.

Have a great week again and thanks for looking,

These are awesome. I missed that era in Portland as I wasn't there until half the shop had been demo'ed and painted the lighter color. At least I was able to see it when most of the buildings were still present. It looks awfully bare these days there.

If you have some more of UP in Portland during that era, please share.

Thanks for sharing these with us.

Great stuff, the mud and grime says March as well. Nice follow up photo.

What a great set of photos! I fanned Albina a few times in the 80's and am wondering when the large brick diesel shop came down, as I don't recall anything like it then. Thanks for showing these real gems! Even the switch stand lamp is classic.

Those DD-40AX's were such signature engines for the UP, and they got alot of good miles out them (from what I've read), that I can't believe they didn't order more, or rebuild them for more service.

Also, those U50C's were double-engined. That's ALOT of weight riding on 3-axle trucks, but the trucks look taller and well-sprung. How well did they ride with all that weight? I ask because EMD failed with the SD-90MAC, a single engine behemoth, and one of the complaints was it rode very rough, given the huge engine and fuel tank. So how did the U50C's compare?
