Nostalgia & History > The Bay Area SP style in 1977Date: 09/14/14 17:21 The Bay Area SP style in 1977 Author: lamta_jay # more from the Nikon of Lee Meyers (or was it a Nikormat?)
I think these are self explanatory #1.....A evening commute with 3197 in charge on 6/27/1977...San Bruno #2.....Lee did not share many "roster" shots but since I like SW1200's this is in San Francisco on September 11, 1977 #3.....Couldn't tell you what train this is but its got SD9 #4450 up front on October 22, 1977. San Bruno That's all I got for this one thanks for looking and see you down the tracks Jay Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/14/14 17:23 by lamta_jay. Kent in CArmel Valley Date: 09/15/14 08:38 Re: Train 117 Author: TheG-Man First pic clearly shows train #117 which should have been the third morning "fleet" commute out of San Jose. As I recall it was the first "skip-stop" of the morning. Nos 113 and 115 were locals that made all the usual stops.

From the looks of it, I would swear that the shot of Huff n' Puff (boiler-equipped 4450-51) ahead of all of those Geeps is the Bayshore-Watsonville Turn, which usually had five or six Geeps for power in the late 70's. The problem is that the train appears to be a westbound in the afternoon, and the Turn went on duty at 10:00 AM. So, it is likely is one of the (usually two) Pool 2 jobs from Bayshore to West Oakland that ran in the afternoon. Could also be the Permanente hauling a large setout for San Jose, including all of those Geeps. The 1419-1420 were the regular locos on the Permanente, but I suspect that Huff n' Puff substituted occasionally, though I never witnessed it. My recollection was that the 1442 was the substitute, going back to the 2700's days when they came from NWP, but whatever. The summer sun would light up the engineers side of the train when rising in the east. LOVE the 3197 shot!! That was one very classy paint scheme. And -- the 3197 clearly shows #117 in her number boards. That was, as "TheG-Man" pointed out, #117 was the first skip-stop train of the westbound morning rush-hour trains. Remember that all odd-numbered trains ran railroad westbound (towards SF) while all even-numbered trains ran railroad east (away from SF). My guess is a Pool 2 job coming in from West Oakland on a Sunday afternoon. 4450 and 51 were in the commute pool and on weekends SP would send some commute power out on freight. On Sunday evening, they'd all head back to Bayshore and San Jose to be serviced and readied for their Monday commute assignment. |
