I always love to see the Kodachromes. In your 7th photo, that doesn't look like a standard Dash 8 cab...was that an early prototype or some other unique model?
Ryan Wilkerson Fair Oaks, CA Date: 09/16/14 21:38 Re: A few from 02-15-87 Author: dlbowen ATSF 7401, 7402 and 7403 had this shorter cab and were rated at 3900 HP instead of 4000 HP

Only three were built (ATSF 7400-7402) and are considered testbed locomotives. The followed three B32-8 (BN 5497-5499) and a single B36-8. These are prototypes for the DASH 8 family. General Electric built 145 B39-8 with now familiar Dash 8 cab and hood configuration before switching to the DASH 8-40B. There was a similar arrangement with GE's six-axle Dash 8 locomotives. Just an FYI, if you are interested. Images 1-5 are of a 158 Train, Image 6 is a 198 Train, and Image 7 with the two B39-8's on Ash Hill, is a 169 Train - that was a common train make-up for that symbol. Also happens to be the same train that I caught with all three 7400's on it, at Klinefelter. All are very nice shots - and - brought back many memories of being out there during that time. Thanks for sharing them, Bob ATSF100WEST......Out Date: 09/17/14 00:15 Re: A few from 02-15-87 Author: ATSF100WEST RyanWilkerson Wrote:

About any difficult question will be answered promptly. One does not need a motor drive to photograph multiple exposures of the same train here. This area is the epitome of solitude.

BTW, in looking at the back-lighting on the 3854 and that cut of pigs ahead of the auto-racks, I'm going to say that was an 893 Train. The pigs behind the power was his pick-up at San Bernardino; the auto racks were almost always first out departing L.A. (at that time). Thanks again! Bob ATSF100WEST......Out |
