Dec. 1977 Reno Fun Train at Norden & near Tunnel 6
Author: weather

Robert Morris splendid pictures at Yuba Gap in 1979 reminded me that I shot the Reno Fun Train two winters earlier during the drought of 1977. The first image is the eastbound train just pass the Norden Signal Bridge with two SDP-40's on the point. The next two shots show a portion of the pre-Superliner equipment. That particular weekend, I stayed overnight at Norden and took some shots on the Fun Train the following day on the westbound train exiting the snowsheds on # one track above Donner Lake headed towards Tunnel Six.

Some of you eagle eyed folks can tell me in I may have mislabeled the sleeve. This may be #5 and 6. But the train is too long to be Amtrak. Text and Photos By Mike Pechner Copyright, 2014. All Rights Reserved.

Those last ones with the snow sheds look like a model railroad Mike. Nice photos.

How many seasons did those Fun Trains
(or whatever they were) run east over
Donner in daytime? The first ones
were Tuesday east, Thursday west
as I recall.

Friday trains were always out of Oakland
around 1800-- right? Question is, which
years did some Funnish Trains leave Oakland
in the morning. 1973, wasn't it, and when else?

They tried a mid week train in 1974 during the gas shortage, but it didn't sell. Some years it was 6PM and later in Amtrak 6:30PM. Arrival was still 7PM in Oakland.

Now There was a Rotary Club charter that ran in January on a Sunday AM and came back Monday night. One trip.

That dome-observation car looks like a 1947 Twin Cities parlor car.

Dome forward of the center of the car--
were the Twin Cities cars the only ones
like that?

The only dome I see on the Fun Train is the round end car at the end

The car running platform forward behind the Westbound Fun Train power is Autoliner 100. For the last 32 years, she has been named Yerba Buena and owned and operated by Rail Ventures.
