Last MILW varnish, Madison to Milwaukee ?
Author: valmont

That's what it says on the slide mount .... the date is Feb. 16, 1957. However one web site I found had this: "1957: 18 Feb. – The last Madison-Milwaukee passenger trains are discontinued." Questions: What train was this? Was it a daily? Was the photographer mistaken? (see below, would surprise me if Bruce was mistaken) Did the schedule of this train allow for both of these dates to be correct, one date for one direction the other date for the other direction?

I'm sure someone will help ... no matter what, this really is a fine view of RR history.

p.s. found another, almost identical shot, smoke and all, this is a Bruce Black shot ... why am I not surprised???

My 1954 Official Guide shows several trains daily Chicago-Milwaukee-Madison, one of which was named "On Wisconsin".

Note that Chicago-Madison trains not operating via Milwaukee (the Sioux and the Varsity) continued until Amtrak Eve.

So... is this scene at Madison? It would be good to know, TIA. Madison was the hometown of one of my fellow 80s KS Gangsters, Mark Simonson was a HUGE Milwaukee fan. He's now deceased.

Lance:
Never been to Madison and location was not noted but someone should recognize the depot, just won't be me!

Yes, that is the Milwaukee's Madison depot. It still stands.

Milwaukee put large numerals on the sides of the E7s after Union Pacific Day in 1955. Since UP practice displayed train numbers in the number boards there was only the very small locomotive number at the rear. The large numerals on the front matched UP's practice and made the locomotive easier to identify.

The following, dated 10-31-65, is a little small to read, but you can go to my website for a slightly larger version:

I wonder if it was the train that ran on the original line via Milton and Whitewater and Waukesha?

I believe the last passenger service on the Waukesha line ended in 1949.
