Need a What, Where, and When

The only thing I know about this photo is that it was taken by William E. Botkin. (Photo/PRS Archive)

957 was delivered in 1955. Was transferred to Amtrak in 1971 as 430, but I'm sure the photo is older than that.

One of 3 possible options.....the last days of the Portland Rose west of La Grande or train 5&6. I don't recognize the location. The Butte Special carried a baggage car and sleeper/snack car along with coaches until the end.

Yes, much older than 1971.

The first Chair Car has an ACI (Automatic Car Identification) code label on the side. Those didn't appear on passenger equipment until around the Spring of 1969.

No train number in the indicators, which also confirms post 1967.

And are those snow shields tilted down slightly, towards the ends of the unit?

Looks to me like the Portland Rose in its last days....maybe at Denver?

I agree, I would guess 5 or 6.

The late Portland Rose often had freight cars on the rear (i.e. TOFC) on the east end of the run. Not sure where photo is.

I say it is in Cheyenne. Look at the tower in background over the top of the train. upkpfan
