Nostalgia & History > C&NW In Northwest Illinois 10-5-68Date: 10/21/14 17:42 C&NW In Northwest Illinois 10-5-68 Author: MILW86A A few years ago, Mike and Mark Nelson showed these two pics at a slide show in Cedar Rapids. The date on these photos are 10-5-68, when I was just one day old into this world. About a week later, I get a letter from them saying they had some extras of this train and sent them to me. I was truly grateful. The C&NW stopped running on the old CGW for good in 1971 between Dubuque and Sycamore, IL. The Nelsons have several CGW shots from this area during its last years.
First photo is the 111A West at Stockton, IL. Stockton was a crew change point between Oelwein and Chicago. The old two story depot is in the background. In the second photo the same train is at East Cabin IL at East Dubuque, waiting for the IC Bridge to close so it can cross the Mississippi into Dubuque and head inot Fairground Yard. the CGW F's kept their CGW numbers until 1971. Photos by Mike and Mark Nelson from my collection. Hope you enjoyed. Sorry that the lighting is not as neat as the photos you just posted. I did however post a picture of MILW 85A last week! It's about time for some CGW pictures on T.O.
1. CGW F3A 111A at St. Paul, MN on June 2, 1964. 2. CGW Station, Stockton, IL on August 17, 1964. Marty Bernard Date: 10/21/14 21:24 Re: C&NW In Northwest Illinois 10-5-68 Author: terrybaker Some great photos from a Great railroad! I especially enjoyed Marty's last shot of the depot and vehicles; now that's 60's railroading as I like to remember it.
The Great Western ceased to exist at one minute past midnight on 7/1/68, and yet the die hard fans are as loyal as ever. If you need proof, check out some of the e-Bay prices that the scarce original CGW slides command when offered. Here are a few train orders that were copied in that Stockton depot: 1) thru 3) CGW Stockton Clearance + T.O.'s 38-39 addressed to No. 192 11/15/66. Note that Extras 120 & 121 West are the only early GP's (GP7's) owned by the CGW. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/21/14 21:28 by terrybaker. Well, company cars were often the base model, or "stripper" as I like to call them. I find it interesting that the CGW paid little attention to aesthetics, having a blue-green Chevy that clashed pretty well with their logo. Tom Y |
