Waycar Wednesday: SOO Pride at Weyerhaeuser WI
Author: terrybaker

A recent tip through Weyerhaeuser WI turned up a preserved SOO Line caboose, a depot, and some other railroad subjects worth recording.

At one time, Weyerhaeuser was a division point on the original SOO, complete with roundhouse and yard. The east-west CN line Weyerhaeuser is located on has enjoyed a resurgence due to the excellent quality of fracking sand extracted in that area, and one of the big producers is located on the east side of the town.

Given the significant role of the railroad in the town's history, it's possible to see that recognition in more than just a preserved piece of equipment.

Here's a link to a recent Eastern Board posting with pictures of current CN and industrial operations at Weyerhaeuser: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?2,3550262

All of the following photographs were taken at Weyerhaeuser 9/19-20/14:

1) & 2) Displayed SOO caboose in the park located between the CN main and Railway Ave.
3) Sign denoting the Railway Garden in that park

4) Preserved depot at the corner of E. Railway Ave. & N. 5th St. It has been moved away from the track, rotated 180 degrees, and now sits on a concrete foundation. Looks like a pretty significant restoration project!

5) The Whistle Stop Restaurant & Bar, also located on Railway Ave.

Well, the Hiawatha Bar & Grill in Junction City WI, located next to the ex-MILW Valley Sub, has got to be a contender!
