Rocky Mountain Elevator, Pendroy. MT 1976
Author: valmont

A lot of us have had these trackside structures in our viewfinder over the years, and Bruce Black was no exception. With exquisite lighting, he preserved some history of the Rocky Mountain Elevator @ Pendroy, MT on Oct. 10, 1976. The box cars and sky just add to the quality of the shot. Along with hordes of depots, Bruce also shot numerous elevators and other trackside structures.

Classic shot! That sure is a nice little elevator. I'm guessing its not there anymore?

Wooden elevators and 40' grain service boxcars were so common to Montana. All the boxcars are gone but an amazing number of the elevators remain across the state. Some are abandoned, some are used for storage and a few are used for feed blending. Now the Central Montana has it's Judith River bridge rebuilt there should be wooden elevators along the line shipping grain next harvest.

Gorgeous!

When did the line above Choteau get abandoned? I'm guessing that The line south from there is still operational? It was when I was there in 2012, at least.

If you haven't seen it, this is a great short film from 1981.

Interesting piece. I like where he moves the boxcar with the little hand-held prod. Classic! That must be fun to do when it is -20C.
