Westbound, climbing the Short Line hill. The engines are west of Chestnut Street, and the caboose would be just about out of SPUD.

The locomotive consist shows it is a transfer to Minneapolis.

Note the pile of debris in the junkyard on the far right. Then First Lady Ladybird Johnson presented a beautification award thereon.

Area to right of lower trackage is now condos.

Now THAT you don't see often - Baldwins m/u'ed with other builder's power. Phenomenal shot!

I take it that these had electric m/u connections. Were all of Milwaukee's Baldwin 6 motors so equipped? Any 4 motors?

Milwaukee had 8 AS-616's. No.s 560-563 had Baldwin pneumatic control and could not interface to locomotives other than themselves. No.s 564-567 had PG governors and could MU with other manufacturers products.

564-567 are unique in another way. They were purchased over two years after the 560-563, and by that time Baldwin had redesigned the AS-xxx style carbody (with taller, peaked roofed hoods and tri-mount trucks). Milwaukee wanted the old carbody, so - you guessed it - Baldwin built them with the old style carbody and Commonwealth trucks. But, they added 45 degree numberboards at the corners!

They only had two Baldwin 4 motor road switchers, RS-12's 926 and 927 recently discussed.

They were equipped with switcher trucks and did not have any MU connections.

Now, I have a question. Is the 469 one of the Alcos with Blunt trucks? Kinda looks like it in the picture.

Sorta looks that way, those side frames are a little hard to miss. Hope
the GP-30s were enjoying their ripped off trucks.

Great photo. Very winter-ey, interesting look back emphasized by the City background with weather.

I've seen that ramp technique used on model layouts, never imagined it had a prototype.

Here it is looking uphill. The CP has single tracked it. It does look like a model railroad grade.

Once again, the CMStP&P puts on a great show. Everything we shot of that road were and are keepers. Thanks for the excellent photos.

Cool photo. Probably an everyday occurrence at the time, now "Wow"!

Too cool, a Blunt trucked Alco RS-3 sandwich with Baldwin AS616s on a transfer...amazing stuff!

Additional information for valmont: Shot was taken off the Smith Avenue
High Bridge, a long time St. Paul landmark I rode over many times. At
the time of the photo, this was double track, but as Marty's post at
Chestnut Street shows, this was later single tracked. At the top of
the ledge was Fordson Junction, where the branch to the St. Paul Ford
plant, now closed, took off. Top of the grade, however, was Snelling
Aveune, several miles away.

I would think this cut was largely empties as even with three engines,
this was a lot of train for Short Line Hill.
