Pepsi on the Surfliner

Not only in the Surfliner (as with Pepsi Cola soft drinks) but on them, for a few years at least.

I rode the cab of Amtrak's "No. 77" ( can't recall if 577 or 777) from Oceanside to L. A. on 6/5/92 in doing some early planning for Metrolink and we met engine 509 headed toward San Diego at Santa Ana, painted in the original "Pepsi Can" scheme.

Note the old end of double track just RR west (geographic north) of Santa Ana Blvd. Within a few years the single track bridge over the Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) would be rebuilt as a double track structure and in stages a second main track would be built from here to Orange and on to Fullerton.

Also gone: the center platform at Santa Ana, replaced by a new platform to the right of this picture and a pedestrian overpass.
