Kansas City in the early '70's
Author: valmont

Wilbert Harrison 1959 song "Kansas City" is R&R classic, and 'going to Kansas City' was on many a RR photographers to-do list. The KC area had a wide variety of RR's and motive power that drew many photographers there ... and kept us coming back.

Here's a six-pack from my visits ...

1. @ Argentine, KS 8/15/71 .. when 'gators worked the yard

2. in the KC 'bottoms' 8/15/71

3. @ the KCS/Rock yard 3/17/73

4. a modified MP 1062 3/18/72

5. another shot in the bottoms ... we called the GM&O engine facility area the 'Gummo' due to the excessive amount of oil that you had to negotiate to get the shots 3/17/71

6. the Rock was always interesting, and SP power was around there too ... 3/17/71

What a great city it was back then. I'd have to say it was the best rail fan city in the country and even better than Chicago since KC had almost as much variety and traffic but it was so much more accessible given it's compact size plus everything was relatively safe to visit as well. It's still a great railroad city but it sure has lost a lot in the process but then again so has everyplace.

Thanks for sharing these photos. Any more?

Great shots! You photographed some of the engines I missed. I wish I had had more time and money and expertise to do the area right when I moved to the area in 1973.

Six treasures! Thanks for sharing these. My favorite was the Frisco Baldwin with the piggyback trailer with the slogan.

Classics all, Vince! Stuff I was old enough to have a chance to see, but not old enough to know I could use a camera. Sigh...

My jaw dropped at that shot of the Gator. My username will tell you that Santa Fe's RSD-15s are some of my favorite locomotives ever! Thank you for sharing!!
