Nostalgia & History > Got your ears on?Date: 10/25/14 15:20 Got your ears on? Author: railstiesballast The 7201 has it's "ears" on, as in the modifications to air intake and air flow around locomotives that struggle to get air for cooling and combustion when passing in multiple unit through tunnels.
No tunnels for a long ways, he is headed east at Bertram, CA, on October 27th, 1978, and unless he wanders onto the Clifton Branch there are no more tunnels east of here on the SP. Date: 10/25/14 15:29 Re: Got your ears on? Author: hogheaded Nice photo!

Author: Labiche The "elephant airs" were to improve radiator cooling in tunnels by drawing in cooler air closer to the rails. Combustion air on EMD's is drawn in through the air filter compartment at the front of the engine compartment.
