Some Milwaukee Road Hood Units
Author: MartyBernard

1. MILW SD40-2s 183 and 193 at Bensenville Yard, June 24, 1977 [corrected per comment below]

2. MILW GP9 206 on the Chicago Union Station leads at Randolph Street on December 14, 1972. That looks like a North Coast Limited baggage car so the Geep may have been moving a whole train. This was during the period Amtrak was running two trains to the Pacific North West, The Empire Builder and The North Coast Hiawatha.

3. MILW RS3 455 at Wisconsin Rapids on August 23, 1966.

Marty,
I am enjoying the history tour you are giving us! One question, what is the purpose of the duct on top of the hoods of some of the Alco?

I don't know. My guess would be to do something with spark arresting.

It looks like the duct bypasses the exhaust, using the
warm air from the radiators to warm the intake air or
to heat the cab!!

Marty, thanks again for posting all these images. #183 and #193 are both SD40-2s and #455 is an RS-2 with trucks from an S-1 or S-2. #455 may have been an RSC-2 previously.

The duct on top of some ALCo units was to recirculate warm air to the engine compartment in cold weather. The box over the radiator fan of the GP9 in image #2 did the same thing for EMDs using much less metal.

pic 3, super shot of the NYC hopper car, a 70 tonner. But what is the next car? I guess it must be Frisco, and FEC

I went back to the original and the first two letters on the top line are "FL" so it certainly could be "Florida".
