Little Boys and Milwaukee Road Trains
Author: MartyBernard

These photographs and captions are from the Minnesota Historical Society's Online Collection. They seem to show a school field trip(s) to visit the railroad. I do not see any little girls!

The sixth kid back is certainly a girl; the ninth is probably, and the last two might be.

I can still remember our kindergarten class taking a ride on the C&O. I have my fathers slides of the event. Thanks for posting.

Cool field trip! Wish my school had such a program. Love the interior parlor car image!

That parlor looks like one of the original "Beavertails",
not the lamp on a console through the passageway at
the rear of the car. I think this may be one of the
observations with rear facing seats (second batch of
beavertail cars ... about 1938 if I recall correctly).

This was for many years a standard field trip in Minneapolis Public Schools.

It included a train ride from Milwaukees Minneapolis depot to SPUD and return.

Given the date, it's remotely possible that's my class!

Yes the sixth for sure as what boy would wear long hair back then and a frilly shirt sleeve? Good catch, back then it was boys and railroads, girls and dolls. Things have sure changed over the years but the smiles have not.

That sure brings back memories. Our grade school class took an IC train from St. Louis Union Station to Springfield, IL and return. There was still lots of steam still around on the east side of the river and I almost got whiplash trying to see it all. This was back in about 1949.

Here's a WWII-era Milwaukee Road ad featuring a little boy. Nice artwork, don't you think?
I felt inspired to rewrite the ad copy, so, if you are not easily offended by politically incorrect humor, take a look here:
