Bayshore backshops' last day, in the 1st person
Author: hogheaded

TO member Walter Bolander recently kindly shared a story with me of the events surrounding the closing of the Bayshore backshops' erecting hall, told by himself and his dad, a 52-year (!) SP man.

I've placed it on a page at Wx4 for your perusal, because railroaders are the best part of railroading, and dads are the best part of railroaders.

I'm always thrilled to add a story like this from my old, extended SP family.

Wow. How do I thank you, Ed? Dad would probably have laughed, and said, "what the hell are you doin' now, kid?" But I think he would have liked to get the story straight... and I'm sure he'd have said thanks, too.

Thank you, sir.

Walter

He looks very familiar. I spent some time hostling at Bayshore in 69 & 70.
Thanks for sharing.

Interesting account, Ed.

It sounds as if the "storm" that caused all of the damage may have been the Columbus Day Storm of 1962.

Well, I googled "Columbus Day 1962, and found lots of storm info. The one thing I remember, not so much about Bayshore, but the weather, was it interrupted the Giants/Yankees world series game. I remember I was pissed!

So, I'm going to have to agree. It had to have been Oct. 12, 1962.

Thanks, Greg. Another piece of the puzzle solved.

Ed,

The photo you used of the transfer table, etc., which you credit as having possibly been taken by George Solomine - dad worked with a fellow named Solomine - (I *think* I remember him, vaguely, if at all) - could they be one in the same? He did take the pic from a spot that would have been difficult, if even possible, for a non-employee to reach...
