I've Always Wanted to Try This
Author: LarryDoyle

That is, I've always wanted to see how many times I could swing the bell in a 360 degree circle in 1 minute.

Clipped from Danger Lights (1930).

Marty, Danger Lights is all over the Internet for free. Just do a Google search and it will come up on YouTube and Internet Archive for starters. It's a very entertaining film.

Milwaukee is the only railroad I've ever heard of doing this, and it was not a one time event but was done about a half a dozen times or so over a period of at least 1919 to 1930. At least one was between a bipolar electric and a Mallet, on a spidery curved steel trestle.

Another, between a bipolar and a Mallet plus a 2-8-0, on the Change Creek steel trestle. The steamers had the advantage of being on the upside of a 1.57% grade, but the bipolar still won!

This one between two steam engines was apparently in Miles City.

The engine on the left is a class F5 69" drivered Pacific with 39,880 lbs. TE.

On the right is a class L3 63" drivered Mikado with 62,949 lbs. TE.

I would have put my money on the Mikado, and the results seem to bear that out.

Amazing too, is how closely people were standing. (OK, they were mostly nameless actors, and thus dispensable ... but, nevertheless...). No yellow tape in sight.

I can't believe they did this with 2 good steam engines!! Seems crazy, a bit dangerous and a good way to ruin the drive train!
