This is a great shot, though I am having a problem figuring out where this is. B Date: 11/23/14 00:55 Re: ATSF F 342 leads a #77, San Diegan...March 1971 Author: Wildebeest m420:
I believe the train in this shot has just reached the bottom of the grade down into Rose Canyon from the old station of Pacific Beach, located along Santa Fe St. just north of where Balboa Ave. crosses under the track. Just around the curve to the left was the runaround track at Ladrillo, where a spur extended up to a team track near what is now the intersection of Morena Blvd. and Jutland Drive. After travesrsing a reverse curve to the left, just past Ladrillo, the train will pass under Highway 52. This area is filled with industrial buildings now. Yep, as to location I think Wildebeest is on target. I'd say it's right near CP Elvira at the 52 Fwy, yesiree. You can almost hear the growling F units! Date: 11/23/14 11:09 Re: ATSF F 342 leads a #77, San Diegan...March 1971 Author: the_expediter I don't remember how I got to this spot...But it must not have been too hard...I remember getting out of high school and driving down to shoot the 400pm (#77) San Diegan with my new Mamiya-sekor 35mm...thrilled with a camera that could freeze action!- Steve... PS- I don't know how well you can make it out, but the Goodyear Blimp is there...right behind the second linepole on the right( to the right of the baggage car) looking like a crossarm on the pole!...
