Why is the handle to the switch in two colors?

I did a search for Railroad Men and Picture 1 was number 36 on the page from search.

The split flag was done for visibility during day and night.
The white was visible with the kerosene headlight from a
greater distance. The dark portion of the target was more
visible during daylight. Thank you, 3M for inventing
"Scotchlite" reflective materials during the 50s. The
casualty was the glass-bead signs and targets such as
this one.
