Nostalgia & History > Santa Fe Switcher SaturdayDate: 11/22/14 12:23 Santa Fe Switcher Saturday Author: MartyBernard These three scans are from Rick Burn's slides.
1. ATSF H12-44 547 in Kansas City, MO in August 1964. Built by Fairbanks Morse December 1955 and retired December 1972. What a great scene Rick. 2. ATSF NW2 2412 at 43rd and Damen, Chicago, IL August 1963. This old puppy was built by EMC in August 1939 with builder number 924 and was retired in May 1970. She was traded in to EMD. 3. ATSF H12-44TS 543 from Chicago's Roosevelt Road Viaduct, August 1962. The TS means it had a steam generator to heat the cars it was switching. Built by Fairbanks Morse May 1956 and retired May 1974. Two sources says this switcher has been preserved but give contradictory current locations. I guess Rick liked to take switcher photos in August. Please enjoy Rick's photographs, Marty Bernard Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 11/22/14 12:56 by MartyBernard. During the messy SPSF affair this whole collection was sent to the California State Railroad Museum in Sacremento, where most was left outside at the mercy of vandals and the weather. In 2009 543 came back home to Illinois, riding a flat car to the museum at Union. Here's a pic I took there in 2012. I'd love to see this one restored, but for now the RSD15 and FP45 seem to be the highest priority Santa Fe diesels there. Someday...

This appears to be one of the rare Santa Fe zebras with white stripes instead of aluminum ("silver"). Quite a few H12-44's were done up this way, along with a handful of NW2's. Note that the road number and the pinstripe above the diagonals are aluminum. |
