This was the first and last time I chased 4449 back in 1981. The crowds and insane drivers were too much for me.

Very nice pic. It appears to be s/b at the tunnel at Calore right
at the border. I too remember this trip well and I will never forget
the return trip to K. Falls. Suddenly a two lane highway became a
2 1/2 lane highway with two lanes going north and 1/2 lane trying its
best to go south. Those were the days - before the Highway Patrol
fully realized what they were dealing with. The fact that somehow we
all survived amazes me to this day.

That would have been Dick Noonan, who went on to be a VERY active volunteer at the California State Railroad Museum.

That's a nice photo! I was on the train
then and am very glad I chose to ride
instead of driving. The 4449 sure is a
real people magnet!

Dick Noonan is a really nice guy, and I
am very glad the CHP finally did the
"Trooper on a Train".
