The Ambassador on the B&M
Author: MaineLines

In the 1960s the Boston and Maine handled the Washington-Montreal Ambassador up the Connecticut River to White River Junction, Vermont where it was handed off to the Central Vermont. It always seemed to have a mixture of equipment from the participating railroads. Here we see it northbound passing the CV yard at Bellows Falls? and then approaching White River Junction.

After swapping trains with the CV, the B&M F7s depart White River Junction southbound.

Great shots of a less-posted railroad. Two locomotives and four cars yet not one paint scheme matches - very interesting...

Very nice shots. It's good people were out capturing images at this time.

Very interesting shots - wonder how many people were riding? Doesn't seem like there were many amenities on this train!

One of the best set of photos of this train I've ever seen; great composition aside the detail of the consists and engines pops off the screen, especially like the crusty A-unit in the Minute Man scheme with the dulux worn off of it's stripes, the McGinnis version is a rare treat as well.
Thanks for posting , what a great train to model.

The blue and white F unit looks very cool in that scheme.

Thanks for posting those...can never get enough of those last days of private passenger service, especially in northern New England.

While you can a find several photos of the 1960's Ambassador on-line, I've never been able to find any of it's night-time counterpart, the Montrealer/Washingtonian. I expect that's because it ran mostly in the dark. Amtrak's version ran on a later schedule, especially in the '80s and '90s, so seems to have been much more popular with photographers. If anyone has photos of the NH-B&M-CV-CN Montrealer please share.

One other anomaly about the Ambassador's consist - the regularly assigned CN RPO was labeled "United States Mail"...did other CN subsidiary routes have similar cars?

Old Boston and Maine RR operating crews on the old Ambassador were basaed out of Springfield, MA and worked between Springfield and White River Junction, VT.
