Author: MartyBernard

This is a follow-on to my E-unit post yesterday.

1. Right to Left, SOU F7A 6714, FP7 6133, F3A 4129, and F3A 6706, two FP7s and two F3s on August 21, 1969. Note 6133 is preserved and operable at The North Carolina Transportation Museum.

2. SOU FP7 6134 and B&O E8A 1466 on April 26, 1971.

3. SOU FP7s 6140 and 6132 on August 21, 1969.

Comments and corrections welcome.
Enjoy,

I never understood why the Southern didn't put their round herald on the noses of the F units. That nose was just crying for a herald!

Early SOU F Unit scheme had a nose herald. Subsequently, they were deleted for economy measures. In 1972 heralds make a comeback on E8s, FP7s, and new freight GPs and SDs.

Look closely and you will see that 6714 in the first photo has a nose herald.

Love the shot with the Southern engine along side the B&O unit. The B&O unit is an ex-C&O engine for those interested. Thanks for sharing your photos as always Marty and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

So what's the story with the side grill on the Southern 6132? It stops short of the cab for some reason. Can anyone explain why?

Looks to me like a piece fell off.

F units in their latter years didn't need a reason other than age! They ended up in all kinds of strange details.

6706 in photo 1 was delivered with a steam generator. Some Southern F3 and F7 units had s/g, and it's not uncommon to see photos of Southern passenger trains (usually the short ones in the 1950s or early 1960s) without an E unit or an FP7.

Units in photo 3 are black although there is a tint in the photo (on my computer display, at least).

The tint is due to the old slde turning blue and I could not get it all out.
